Surmount opened up its Green Headquarters to the Interior design Department of at “Bharati Vidyapeeth College of Architecture and School of Interior Design and Decoration, Navi Mumbai” to help them get an overview of Sustainability and its role in the creation of Green Interiors in Existing Buildings.
The course co-coordinators’ interest was sparked by Surmount’s monthly newsletter, ‘Enspire’. He felt that a visit to the company’s Green office would be a great way to better engage the students of interior design in firsthand knowledge of Green designing and the outcomes that it delivers.
The students were introduced to Surmount’s ‘Ten Dimensions of Sustainability’ that covers different aspects of Green construction.
Says Nilesh, a student from the group, “We study Green interior designing, but seeing it in practice has helped us relate to these concepts better. It is an amazing experience to so many different aspects of Green Interior Designing deployed in a single place and have them working together.”
Surmount’s Headquarters is Green on various accounts. The office’s unique design lets in natural light while capturing the light’s energy to power the office, using roof mounted solar panels. The lighting system primarily consists of ceramic metal halide fixtures and is sensor based, making the entire lighting set up energy efficient. The office is also water efficient, consuming 30% less water compared to industry standards. Sustainable materials, such as bamboo, steel, hardwood/plywood and low or zero VOC paints, primers, finishes etc., have been used at most places.

Surmount is one of the leaders in the green building space in India. It has encouraged the professionals in its organization to achieve LEED Acccredited Status. Surmount has added another 3 professionals to its IGBC Accredited Professionals. This increases to fourteen, the number of its staff members that have been Accredited by either USGBC, IGBC or GRIHA. .
While the IGBC AP examination is not based on any specific rating system, it is designed to test the knowledge of a candidate on green building design and construction. Qualified individuals can be involved in projects registered under the 'IGBC rating programmes' like IGBC Green Homes, IGBC Factory buildings, IGBC Existing Buildings etc., Projects would achieve one credit point under 'Innovation and Design' category if an IGBC AP is part of the project team.
Says Mr. Balbir Khera, CEO, Surmount Energy Solutions, “Having sustainability professionals who are accredited by global agencies allows us to deliver greater value to our clients who are looking for expert guidance on their projects that are going Green. The three new additions to Surmount's IGBC APs list
Being a pioneer for green and sustainable construction,.and its own office located on the first floor of Belapur station complex being a testament to its commitment, Surmount has introduced a number of green principles in the design of its space and has applied for the USGBC LEED Commerical Interiors rating that it hopes to get shortly. Now, Surmount has added energy generation to its offices, with the installation of 14 solar photo-voltaic panels to support the energy needs of the office through renewable means.
Surmount’s solar arrays are installed in the first floor terrace of the company’s head office. The capacity of the system is 2.8 kW. The system was designed and implemented by Surmount’s Engineers, and the solar panels used were from the Surana Group, based in Hyderabad, India.
Mr. Pange, one of the lead Solar PV specialists at Surmount Energy added that, " The rates at which energy costs are rising in India, solar panels are a great alternative for many offices that have the right insolation level. We expect our payback to be 8 years. It also reduces our use and sizing of our diesel generator and the ever increasing diesel costs that accompany it."
The best part of going solar, according to Surmount Energy’s CEO, Mr. Balbir Singh Khera is that, it brings about a change in the outlook of the people working in the office when it comes to energy conservation. “Not only are they happy about using clean energy, but our staff has also become more energy conscious and is looking at different ways to cut down energy consumption,” he said.

Surmount partnered with TERI and MEDA at Krishidhan 2011 to demonstrate a working Wireless Energy Monitoring System in operation.
The working display of the system was created in the ‘Renewable Energy and Energy Efficiency Pavilion’ at the Exhibition. The display was part of a green farm house walk-through model that was created to demonstrate the GRIHA Green rating system. The house was setup to receive energy from a Hybrid Wind-Solar Renewable Energy System (also setup by Surmount Energy) and from a conventional 3 Phase electric supply. The BuildTrack wireless monitoring system was setup to monitor the energy generation at the renewable energy sources as well as the energy consumption points with the green house display. The data collected was beamed wirelessly by the BuildTrack appliance to the remote monitoring point where the energy consumption was displayed.
GRIHA’s motto is ‘What gets Measured gets Managed’. In keeping with this theme, BuildTrack was able to demonstrate that green buildings can quickly and efficiently setup was to monitor their energy generation and consumption so that they can take necessary action to improve their energy footprint.
Surmount Energy's CEO Mr. Balbir Singh Khera, addressed the audience on the impact on GRIHA standards on energy consumption and measurement. “We need to find ways in which building owners and tenants can easily understand and quantify the benefit of green, BuildTrack is our means of making that happen”, said Mr. Balbir Khera.

Construction activity has it own set of challenges. These include ensuring the project is on schedule, site materials are secure and safety regulations are followed. In a bid to resolve these issues, Surmount Energy, has launched SiteTrack—a web-based, collaborative online Construction Project Surveillance Software Tool that allows owners, developers, engineers, contractors and architects involved in the project to instantaneously and frequently review the construction jobsite and the ongoing construction activity.
SiteTrack offers 24/7 live streaming video based surveillance. While the system is equipped with Digital Video Recorders (DVRs), it also supports on-line storage of archival footage at remote-location, thus providing on-demand, internet/3G enabled-based access to the surveillance videos. Another exciting feature of SiteTrack is that, it allows the user to remotely control the surveillance cameras in terms of pan, zoom and tilt.
The system has been installed on various project sites and also facilitates collection of time-driven documentary evidences for LEED, GRIHA and other Green Certifications. Lokhandwala Infrastructure is one of the users of SiteTrack. Says Mr. Vikram Pillai, Vice President, Operations at Lokhandwala Infrastructure, “We have installed SiteTrack to monitor two of our sites including an upcoming 85 storey building project.
